Of Things Orange: UT vs. Bama

It used to be the third Saturday of October every year, but in recent years it seems THE game is played on the fourth Saturday of the month. Tennessee versus Alabama. The Vols against the Crimson Tide. What a bitter rivalry it was for more than 50 years. Then the Southeastern Conference expanded and new rivals came into play: Florida and Georgia. Bama is still hated by the Big Orange, but the intensity has subsided somewhat. This year, I expect Tennessee to succumb to the boys from Tuscaloosa for a few reasons: 1) the Vols have not been able to generate any offense and the Tide has Brody Croyle in full health; 2) Croyle will thread balls through the Tennessee secondary like my grandmother used to thread needles; 3) Alabama is primed to beat Tennessee Coach Phil Fulmer on Bryant-Denney field to pay him back for the role he played in revealing recruiting violations three years ago; and, 4) Tennessee has yet to play like a team (with the exception of the second half of the LSU game) and now lacks on field leadership. I will be celebrating Mass while the second half is played out, but I think the game will be decided in the first quarter unless there is another miracle in Davy Crockett's coonskin cap.

Welcome to the blog world Fr Bryan!!

I have a question. Can a man love two brothers? I say yes you can!!!

So Father Bryan, it is ok to love UT and UofM. When they meet on the same field, well that weekend, just go to an Ole Miss game.

My dear son, you are under the mistaken notion that I have no affinity for the Memphis Tigers, cousins, not brothers, of the Tennessee Volunteeers due to different last names (CUSA and SEC). I support the U of M every year EXCEPT when they play the Vols. Even Coach Cal is getting me tickets for the UM-TN basketball game this eyar, but he admitted he knows I will be sitting near the Tennessee bench for that game while I will sit near the Tigers for any other games I attend. As for going to an Ole Miss game the weekend Memphis travels to Knoxville, what will I do with my 14 tickets and do I really want to take a nap on a Saturday afternoon? Peace, Fred.

I guess wearing a walkman to listen to the game is out of the question.

It is possible that you could have one of those Fr. Cashin specials, the 23 minute mass!!!!!

I rely on my ushers, saintly men that they are, to give me hand signals from the back of the church as the game progresses. LOL Just kidding.

I give full attention to the entire liturgy. The real test game during the Arkansas game in 1998. On that occasion, the ushers did give a victory sign as soon as I finished the Final Blessing.

You must go back a long way to remember Fr. Cashin! He was dead before the Diocese of Memphis was created. His modern equivalents are Fr. Gabe DiFederico, at whose 25th Jubilee Mass the priests placed bets on how many breaths he would take during the Eucharistic Prayer, and Fr. Patrick Heenan (even my parishioners miss him at St. James!).

C'mon Father and Fred, to be TRUE BLUE you gotta hate the Orange.

Patrick, you know that AIN'T gonna happen here....

Humor, you must be irish! Only the Irish can make the Irish laugh!!!!!

btw, I really go back (too far)! I am a young 52, I can remember the Latin mass!! Here is a story: I was an altar boy at Historic Old St Joe in downtown Memphis for Monsignor "Fr Pat" Lynch. That was in the early 1960's. Then, we had to learn Latin to be an altar boy. I had trouble remembering the words. I remember Fr Pat telling me "Fake it and mumble like everybody else". Being of Irish parents, I took the advice of a true Irishman and faked & mumbled.
It worked! So there you go!

btw, My dad, who lives in Crossville TN (Near Knoxville) went to se Fr Pat months before he passed away. He was in TERRIBLE shape yet (according to dad), he was smiling as I always remember him. Probably the most influental men in my life (dad and Fr Pat).

Fr Cashin was my High School Principal. He was a great and prayerful man. but He offered the fastest masses ever! You understood every word Fr Cashin said!!

Man, you have a lot of awesome history behind you there. Fr. Guthrie, Fr Cashin, Fr Bush to name a few. Holy Rosary is a warm place to worship.

While I have you, Thanks for the instructions on the rosary on the HR web site. Even we cradle catholics need to have a reminder and a little structure of how to pray.

I grew up in St Paul parish. Fr Rick also follows a great line of pastors (Cleary, Bush, Walker, Oglesby, McArthur). Fr Oglesby (then pastor) married my wife and I 21 years ago in Fryer's chapel at St Peter's Church Memphis.

I am a member of St Marys and there too Fr Mickey follows a great line of pastors (Stelling, Al Kirk, Paraham).

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to reply to me.

btw, Your dogs look wonderful. My wife and I have two wonderful dogs: Buster, a Bassett-Beagle and Peanut, a Dapple Dachshund. We feed two labs passer-bys (Summer & Gus) that apparently have adopted us. They (I guess) live around the neighborhood.

Would it be considered anticlerical to mumble "roll tide" in here somewhere? But then again, as long as the Irish beat BYU, the world will be right enough for me.

SACRILEGE! SACRILEGE! RETURN TO THE DEPTHS OF BAMA, SATAN! AND, MAY TOUCHDOWN JESUS MUFF EVERY PUNT!
